Anak SMA Temukan Kelapa Hasilkan Bioetanol dan Biogas

Jakarta - Ternyata kelapa tidak hanya bisa menghasilkan biosolar, namun bioetanol pun bisa dihasilkan dari ampas dan air kelapa, bahkan limbah dari bioetanol kelapa ini masih bisa dimanfaatkan sebagai campuran biogas.

Hal itu merupakan hasil penelitian dari tiga anak SMA Negeri 2 Pare, Kediri, Jawa Timur, yakni Muh. Wildan Yahya, Ardhy Purwo, dan Diana Sekar Sari yang memenangkan Lomba Karya Ilmiah Remaja (LKIR) ke-41 bidang Ilmu Pengetahuan Teknik yang diselenggarakan LIPI.

Menurut Wildan yang dihubungi dari Jakarta, Kamis (29/10), biofuel ada tiga macam yakni biosolar yang merupakan campuran antara solar dengan minyak nabati yang telah dimetilasi, bioetanol yang merupakan alkohol yang dihasilkan dari fermentasi, sedangkan biogas dihasilkan dari penguraian biomassa secara anaerob oleh bakteri methanogenesis.

Saat ini, ujarnya, pembuatan biosolar, bioetanol dan biogas dilakukan secara terpisah, di mana biosolar dari minyak perasan kelapa sawit, bioetanol dari tebu atau singkong yang difermentasi dan biogas dari kotoran ternak.

"Padahal ketiganya bisa dihasilkan dari buah kelapa (Cocos Nucifera) yang diolah secara bertingkat," ujar juara I LKIR dari karya berjudul: "Optimalisasi Produksi Biofuel dari Kelapa dengan Pengolahan Bertingkat" itu.

Menurut Wildan, kelapa yang melimpah di Indonesia bisa diperas dan menghasilkan minyak nabati berupa biosolar di mana untuk satu liter biosolar membutuhkan 0,48 kg buah kelapa.

Ampasnya, lanjut dia, jangan dibuang, karena masih memiliki selulosa dalam jumlah besar dan tinggal dilakukan hidrolisis dengan larutan asam dan difermentasi dengan Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Demikian pula air kelapa, bisa ditambah sedikit urea sebelum fermentasi, dan jika kadar gula tak sampai 17 persen, maka bisa ditambah glukosa atau sukrosa.

Dengan ampas kelapa 6,56 kg bisa menghasilkan seliter bioetanol berkadar 95 persen, sedangkan bagi seliter air kelapa, sebanyak 11,4 persennya bisa menjadi bioetanol, ujarnya.

Limbah bioetanol ini, lanjut Wildan, jika dicampur kotoran sapi bisa menjadi biogas dengan lebih dulu dilakukan penetralan pH.

"Dari 100 liter limbah bioetanol menghasilkan 2,5 m3 biogas. Limbah biogas juga bisa dijadikan pupuk," tambahnya.(ant/waa)

Pesticides Cencor From Paper

Some researchers have developed a paper-based sensor that automatically changes color to detect pesticide-pesticide organofosfat and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (Ache) others in the food and beverage samples. John Brennan and his colleagues at McMaster University Canada has made a reagent-free devices that detect simple pesticides nanomolar amounts within five minutes on the samples such as milk and lettuce.

Paper is a very interesting material for analytical devices because of relatively cheap, abundant, and can move the working fluid by capillary without external power. Recent focus on diagnostic platforms based on changes in color and paper-based has arisen because of such platforms can be used in locations where there are limited resources.

Tim Brennan uses Ache as a reporter because it is inhibited by pesticides such as organofosfat and karbamat. "Organofosfat still used in developing countries for the spraying of agricultural crops," said Brennan. "Ache-based sensors have the potential for rapid inspection organofosfat in the field."

Change colors obtained using paper-based sensors is clearly a proof of concept studies above, and occurs in seconds.

To test a sample, the end of the paper sensor is placed in the sample solution, which flows through the capillaries into the work-sensing zone where he left berikunbasi. This research team tested the method on real foods such as milk and apple juice that has been laced with pesticides and found that the effective paper-based sensors to detect contaminants. When they tested undelete taken from apple sprayed with pesticides, paper-based test results comparable with conventional mass spectrometry methods.

"Test analit less competitive which, rather than increases, the signal typically still less explored for these tests compared to paper-based direct test," said Samuel Sia of biomedical engineering at Columbia University, U.S..

The researchers hope that their approach could be used for screening runut elements of pesticides in the environment and food samples-smpel in the field. However, although these devices have an active period of at least one month if stored at 4oC, Sia stressed that this can still be a stumbling block in some situations, for storage at 4oC "not feasible in most areas located in remote areas".
